Shop assistant gets 13 years jail for supporting ISIS terrorist group

A 21-year-old shop assistant has been sentenced by the High Court here to 13 years in jail for supporting and possessing materials related to the Islamic State (IS) terror group.
Azizi Abdullah admitted to knowingly support the acts of terrorism involving explosives with the intent to intimidate the public through the Telegram app on his mobile phone.

For the second and third counts, he admitted to possessing some materials related to IS in his mobile phone.

Azizi committed all the offences at F15, Kampung Baru Lubok Buntar, Bandar Baru, Serdang, Kedah, between March 25 and June 29, 2016.

DPP Azlina Rasdi asked the court to give the accused a deterrent sentence to serve as a warning to society.

Azizi, who was unrepresented, told the court that he regretted his actions and has repented.

“This is my first offence. I admit my mistakes. I promise I won’t repeat it,” he said on Tuesday.

High Court judge Justice Nordin Hassan sentenced him to 13 years’ jail for supporting the acts of terrorism and four years each for the two counts of material possession.

The jail sentences are to run concurrently.
