Turkish lawyer detained in Germany turns out to be courier for the Islamic State terrorist group

Turkish lawyer Mutlu Günal who undertook the advocacy of ISIS members in Germany is facing an inquiry for “aiding a terror organisation” as he is reported to be providing assistance for those wanting to join ISIS.

Turkish lawyer Mutlu Günal based in Bonn is a well-known attorney for “radical Islamist” terrorists from ISIS that stand trial in Germany. Günal himself will appear in court now for “aiding the ISIS”.

It came out that police forces from North Rhine-Westphalia Security Directorate conducted a raid on Günal’s office on instruction of federal prosecutor.

According to a special news article by Der Spiegel magazine’s website Spiegel Online, federal prosecutor has launched an inquiry on 42 years old Günal for “aiding a terror organisation” as he is reported to be providing assistance for his clients that want to join ISIS to reach ISIS-held regions.

During a meeting in July 2015, ISIS member Yunus S. who is living in Germany met with his lawyer Günal, telling him that he wanted to join ISIS but had a travel ban. Günal therewith suggested that he travel to Rhodes and then to Turkey in order to cross into Syria freely.

Reports suggest that Yunus S. followed his lawyer’s instructions to reach Syria, where he fought within ISIS for a while before turning back to Germany. Yunus S. appeared at Dusseldorf State Court last May. When Yunus S. was taken into custody, he confessed that Günal helped him go to Belgium.

Günal is also advocating two of ISIS leaders Sven Lau and Ebu Walaa, both of whom are prosecuted in Germany. The hearing of Ebu Walaa continues at Celle Heavy Penal Court and he is accused of recruiting members for ISIS at the German Islam Association in Hildesheim. On the other hand, Sven Lau, tried at Dusseldorf Heavy Penal Court, has been sentenced to 5,5 years in prison.

Mutlu Günal had also advocated Göksel Güler, one of the Turkish intelligence MİT members prosecuted in Germany, in 2015. This MİT case, in which Erdoğan’s former adviser Muhemmed Taha Gergerlioğlu was also tried, was concluded without any of the suspects receiving any sentence due to the secret deals Germany made with Turkey.
