Lebanon authorities detain ISIS-linked terrorist cell

Lebanese authorities arrested five men linked to ISIS in the capital, Beirut, and the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon’s main security agency announced on Tuesday.

The men were all Syrian between the ages of 18 and 25.

“The ISIL cell was made up of five people and was active between Beirut and Dora [in the northern part of the city],” said a statement. “Investigations with the suspects revealed that the ring leader was A A, who was born in 1992.”

A A — who admitted to belonging to ISIS — came to Lebanon at the end of 2016.

According to the statement, he was asked to recruit people in Lebanon three months ago.

Some attacks in Lebanon have been linked to the six-year war in neighbouring Syria, where Lebanese Shiite group Hizbollah is fighting in support of president Bashar Al Assad.

There are more than one million registered refugees in Lebanon fleeing the civil war in Syria.
