ISIS terrorist group member jailed by the Greek court

A 33-year-old Syrian national has been convicted of terrorist offences by a Greek court.

The man, who first came to Greece in 2016 with his family as a refugee, was convicted on murder and explosives charges related to his time in the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) group in Syria.

Arrested in October 2017, the man is now appealing the eight-year jail sentence handed down by the court in Komotini in northern Greece on Monday.

Greek counter-terrorism officers have been carrying out investigations into domestic groups on the extreme left and right, as well as Islamist organizations.

In late January, an Afghan national caught carrying dozens of detonators was detained in Athens by Greek police and charged with the illegal possession of explosives.

Last May, the court in Komotini also convicted two members of the Islamic State terror group and sentenced them to 15 years’ imprisonment for unlawful arms possession. The two men — a 30-year-old Swedish national and a 21-year-old Yemeni — were carrying hunting knives and were trying to cross into Turkey.

Ongoing legal cases regarding the extradition of terrorist suspects to Turkey have also soured relations with Ankara, with the Turkish government accusing Greece of harboring its enemies.
