ISIS terrorists planned suicide attacks with nail bombs in St Petersburg over Christmas and New Year

Islamic State terrorists foiled by Russian intelligence services had planned nail bomb and suicide vest attacks at Christmas and New Year in the city of St Petersburg, it has been reported.

The cell was busted in their lair in a flat in north-western St Petersburg, President Vladimir Putin’s home town.

The first attack was planned around Christmas, with seven terrorists working on the plan.

One of the terrorists revealed during interrogation that they kept significant amount of acetone peroxide, an explosive material, in a garage next to a block of flats.

The unnamed terrorist allegedly said: “I was going to carry out an act of terror in St Petersburg.

“I had to make explosive material, put in plastic bottles and attach some elements (nails) to increase the damage.”

It is reported that police seized a significant amount of explosives and parts of automatic weapons as well as ammunition and extremist literature.

Police discovered and decommissioned a laboratory used for manufacturing explosive devices.

The attack was supposed to involve a suicide bomber in the busy area outside Kazansky Cathedral, as well as a bomb left in another crowded area of Russia’s second city.

Representatives of the Federal Security Service noted that the terrorists were being given instructions from abroad via the internet.

The foiling of the plan comes after a successful terror attack on the St Petersburg metro earlier this year, when a home -made bomb killed 16 people and injured dozens more.
